Choose The Question First
Tracking output, understanding downtime and monitoring multiple machines require different data sets. Start with the person using the information and the decision it should support. Then evaluate the signals, sampling requirements and retention period.
Transport And Meaning Are Different Concerns
OPC UA provides a framework for information modelling and industrial interoperability. MQTT can transport data using a publish/subscribe approach. They are not necessarily alternatives and can be combined in a suitable architecture. Device support must be checked.
A variable name alone is insufficient. Units, timestamps, quality and machine context help avoid incorrect interpretation. A lifetime production counter and a shift counter, for example, answer different questions.
Review These Points In A Pilot
- Data source, ownership and intended display
- Consistent names, units and timestamps
- Storage and reconnection behavior during outages
- Read/write permissions and production network boundaries
- The specific operating insight expected from the pilot
